Politicians, community leaders, and residents gathered November 11th, 2017 at Mount Olive AME Church to remember the 1898 Massacre. November 11th marked the 119th anniversary of the only successful coup d e’tat to ever occur on American Soil. White supremacists like Hugh MacRe, George Roundtree, and William H Bernard formed an armed mob and burned down the only daily black newspaper in all of the United States at the time, known as the Daily Record.
They went on to kill an unknown number of African Americans throughout the Port City, tremendously reducing the black population. The democratically elected, biracial Republican city government was completely replaced by white supremacist Dixiecrats.
