Episode 3 of the Dub City Heartbeat podcast! This was a very special episode, as we were able to sit down with accomplished author, Duke University professor, and respected historian David Cecelski! Cecelski talks about his upbringing and how it influenced him in becoming an expert in the Eastern North Carolina slavery and reconstruction era. One of Cecelski’s many books on eastern NC race relations was about the 1898 Wilmington Coup D’ Etat. In Democracy Betrayed Cecelski and other contributors take a look at the events leading up to the 1898 massacre, the massacre itself, and some of the lasting affects in Wilmington, NC & beyond. In this podcast Cecelski & I talk about how the 1898 Massacre occurred and the ways in which it fundamentally changed politics in North Carolina and beyond for years to come.
